Welcome to Applied Houdini Volumes II – Simulation! In this lesson we’re going to talk about how to make realistic, production quality smoke while creating the result you see here. By exploring many of the microsolvers that make up the main Pyro solver, we will gain an in-depth knowledge of how to precisely control the behavior of our simulation. We’ll begin by examining how a high quality input source helps produce a high quality result, and end with some basic shading and rendering to quickly make our demo look good. Watch out for some pro-tips and tricks along the way, and have fun mastering smoke simulation in Houdini now.

Applied Houdini is a production quality oriented series created by Steven Knipping, currently a Senior Rigid Body Destruction / FX Technical Director at Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Aquaman, Star Wars: Rogue One). Check out my demo reel here: https://vimeo.com/161576184 I’m a senior rigid body destruction and FX TD at Industrial Light & Magic, and have recently worked on films including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Currently working on Star Wars: The Last Jedi! My areas of expertise mainly focus on Houdini-based FX, especially rigid body destruction, particles, and smoke. I have also done a lot of pipeline coding, simulation programming, shader writing, lighting, and even… modeling! Other industry roles included FX positions at Atomic Fiction and The Mill (NYC), and a few years doing hair and cloth at PDI/Dreamworks Animation. Before all that I was a student, ultimately earning an MSE in Computer Graphics from the University of Pennsylvania. I also do lots of metal casting, archery, and of course…. board games.
